How it works

Add your library card into your Apple Wallet or Wallet Passes on Android in just a few minutes.

With contactless having become the main way of paying during the pandemic, an ever-smaller number of us are carrying around physical wallets. A phone is often all you need to carry out most of your tasks and shopping activities around town.

However, if you want to drop by your library, you'd still need your physical library card in most cases.

Libraree Cards aims to bring the same convenience you enjoy while shopping to using your local library. What's more, you can carry your entire family's cards with you as easily as just your own!

First steps

Carry out these steps on your mobile phone!

  1. If you've got an Android phone, you'll want to download Wallet Passes from the Google Play store on your phone.

  2. Grab your library card!

  3. Visit the Libraree Cards site at https://cards.libraree.org . Alternatively, get there using your phone's Camera app to scan this QR code:

  4. Click the green Get Started button.

  5. Choose your library service.

  6. Enter your library card number as it appears on your physical card.

At this point, you'll either be asked to take a photograph of your library card or will be asked for your name. If you're asked for your name, skip the next section.

Taking a photo of your library card

There are actually lots of different types of barcodes used by libraries, so these next few steps are all about trying to find out what kind of barcode is used by your library.

  1. Press the button to take a photo of your card and your camera app will appear.

  2. Try to use the light from a window rather than an overhead light, if at all possible.

  3. Get as close as you can to the barcode on the library card without the picture becoming blurry. To get closer without causing blurriness, using a "pinch" gesture to zoom in.

  4. Take a photo of the barcode and try to get it in the middle of the photo as much as possible.

  5. On the next screen, you'll be asked to move the photo until the barcode sits under the green bar and fills as much of the box as possible. You can pinch to zoom in or out, if required.

If the barcode lines are taller than the box, don't worry - it's fine.

At this point, Libraree Cards will try and turn your barcode back into the number you typed earlier - or something very close to it. If it does that successfully, you'll then be asked to enter your name. Otherwise, you'll be given three options:

  • Re-enter your library card number

  • Take a new photo

  • Reposition the photo within the box.

Finishing up

  1. You'll be asked to enter your name.

  2. After a few moments, you'll be able to download your library card once you've said that you've understood the warning that appears.
